my coworker admitted a patient with a history of...
in non-medical terms:
Trichotillomania is hair loss from repeated urges to pull or twist the hair until it breaks off.
A bezoar is a ball of swallowed foreign material (usually hair or fiber) that collects in the stomach and fails to pass through the intestines.
A HAIR BALL THAT NEEDED TO BE SURGICALLY REMOVED.
I can’t even.

At my Dad's doctors appointment:
The medical assistant just asked to borrow my Dad’s watch to count his respirations as she stood in front of him.

not my night last night
so it began bad with five patients already at the start of shift and progressively got worse as i had:
a hepatic encephalopathy pt who kept trying to get out of bed and was also a diabetic whose blood sugars stayed in the 400s all night even after multiple doses of insulin
my first rapid response because my other pt desaturated to 77% on 4 liters oxygen and only went up to 84% on 15 liters...
Last night's shift kicked my butt
One of my worst nights since i started work. I wish I could sleep till I forget everything that happened. But unfortunately, i may have to be back tonight.
Joy!
Sent home after only four hours of work due to us being overstaffed without any admissions.
I actually wouldn’t have minded staying the whole night tonight because two of my heavy patients got discharged during the day.
Ready to change into my pjs, catch up on a show or two and then go to sleep!
ugh
how I felt about last nights shift. I am so so exhausted. And I can’t sleep because I keep thinking about what I did and didn’t do and everything I need to do again tonight.
There’s a small chance I might be called off work tonight but the nights you really want to be called off are the nights you usually don’t.
Oh well, here’s hoping anyways.
so tired.
one more night of work. cannot wait till 8am tomorrow when I can collapse on my bed and get some more sleep.
May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope...

another busy night but good learning experience:
one. new transfer from IMU with a PCA and TPN/Lipids with an abdominal wet to dry dressing and two JP drains.
two. another PPN/Lipids pt with sepsis getting IV pain meds Q4H. i needed three different IVs - one for PPN/Lipids, one for Zosyn, and one for Vanco. One IV blew so a new one had to be started.

blogging from Perk's Coffee at UCSD campus...
i had a CPR class at the new simulation center in the medical school so i’m on campus today.
i’m totally borrowing UCSD’s wifi to update my computer (including my iPhone) because the one at home is ridiculously slow.
and i just finished doing a little bit of shopping from the bookstore.
so, it’s been a good day so far (despite paying $12 for 6 hours of parking). i...
i am thankful:
for a loving and supportive family. for best friends. for the amazing seven. for iced coffee. for my iPad 2. for katniss, peeta, and gale. for 6 East nurses. for incredible memories. for opportunities. for guidance. for life.
happy thanksgiving, all.
So...
I definitely need to stop scheduling new grad classes right after a night of work because 16 hour shifts do not work for me. And speaking of work, I’ve spent 4/5 days there so I am so ready to have next couple days off.
First on the agenda: SLEEP.
